Aunque está proyectado para 2031, la NASA ya está pensando en su retirada debido a la fatiga de los materiales.
Así que ha elegido a SpaceX para pagarle 843 millones de dólares para desarrollar un vehículo espacial que sea capaz de remolcar la estación hasta un lugar en el que se pueda producir la reentrada en la atmósfera de manera segura.
La NASA y las agencias espaciales participantes en el proyecto confían en que la mayor parte de la estación se desintegre al entrar en la Tierra y, lo que no lo haga, que caiga al Pacífico.
En paralelo, se están desarrollando varias estaciones espaciales que suplirán a esta que lleva operando desde 1998.

Tres personas murieron en el sur de California en una colisión entre dos helicópteros cuando combatían un incendio en el condado Riverside, informaron las autoridades este lunes.
Uno de los helicópteros logró aterrizar, pero el otro no fue tan afortunado. “Por desgracia, el segundo helicóptero se estrelló y trágicamente los tres miembros perecieron”, declaró el jefe de bomberos del Sur de California, David Fulcher, en una conferencia de prensa este lunes.
